Rheinland-Pfalz Rhineland Palatinate (English)
Geography
Rhineland-Palatinate is located in central south-west Germany. The state offers idyllic river landscapes in a mountainous country, historical cities and villages and some of the best wine-producing areas in Germany.
Rhineland-Palatinate shares international borders with France, Luxembourg and Belgium. It borders the German federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia in north, Hesse in east and Baden-Württemberg in south-east, and it surrounds the federal state of Saarland.
The Rhine River flows through the northern part of Rhineland-Palatinate. The Rhine Valley is bounded by the mountain chains of the Eifel and Hunsrück on the west bank of the Rhine in northern Rhineland-Palatinate, while the Westerwald and Taunus mountains are found on the east bank. These mountain chains are separated from each other by several tributaries of the Rhine: the Mosel, the Lahn, and the Nahe.
