Thüringen The Free State of Thuringia (English)
Geography
Thurgina is bordered by the German states of Lower Saxony, Saxony Anhalt, Saxony, Bavaria and Hesse. Thuringia is known in Germany for nature and winter sports. Germany's most famous hiking trail, Rennsteig and the winter resort of Oberhof can be found here.
The most noticeable geographical characteristic is the Thuringian Forest, which are the woodlands in the southwest. The Werra River, a tributary of the Weser River, divides the mountain chains from the volcanic Rhön Mountains, which are partly in Thuringia, Bavaria and Hesse. In the northwest, a small part of the Harz Mountains are to be found. The eastern side of Thuringia is a plain through which the Saale River flows.
