Program Activities...
In the Host Nation program, activities are geared to the learner's interest, developmental level, and learning style. To develop an understanding of the culture and enrich the ability to communicate activities we use include songs, games, school exchanges, guest speakers/visits, books, films, folktales, and stories. Collaboration between music, art, and P.E. teachers as well as classroom teachers enhance learning also. Students usually meet twice every 5 school days, for about 45 minutes at a time.
The planning is organized around thematic units in connection to the standards, and establishes a balance among the basic goals of culture and language acquisition.
The German language is taught in a meaningful communicative context that responds to the student's need to communicate with host nation speakers.
The culture element of the program is presented and explored with the students through experiences with cultural material and study trips. Unfortunately due to security and monetary issues, the amount of study trips have been reduced from former times and a large part of the Host Nation Program has been impacted.
The use of technology renders classrooms activities stimulating and meaningful for the students.
