Nikolaustag
We celebrate and remember St. Nikolaus on December 6th. The custom in Germany that Nikolaus gives presents to the children is about 1,000 years old. Today the children put their shoe or boot in front of the bedroom or livingroom door so Nikolaus can fill them with little sweets.
Nikolaus appears in person sometimes to German kindergartens or schools and also to some families. He carries a “Golden Book” that lists good and bad deeds children have done. Children are reminded to be good and they get presents – but of course they need to say a poem or sing a Nikolaus song. In earlier times Nikolaus' helper, Knecht Ruprecht or Krampus came along with Nikolaus.
