Parent Information...
One of the most important things you can do to help your children is be involved with their education and get to know the host country where you live. If you've studied the language, literature, or history of Germany, you have a great start. If not, you may begin to feel more comfortable here by taking an introductory course if possible. Alternatively, read not only travel guides, but also histories of Germany and other countries you might be going to or biographies of its prominent citizens. Look for English language news sources from your host country on-line. Take tours, short trips, or vacations to different areas of Germany. Find a cookbook and try cooking some of the national dishes. Anything you and your family can do to familiarize yourselves with the country you're about to become a part of or already are, will enhance your experiences enormously.
Don't let the thought of the German language hold you and your family back from taking advantage of the great opportunities you have while here. Many Germans have learned English and are willing to try to speak with you, especially if you ask if they speak a little German. Of course, attempts at speaking German are appreciated, but it is not mandatory to get along or have fun.
